An Act of God

Earlier this month when Hurricane Charley hit Florida a little further south than forecast, Governor Jeb Bush is reported* to have said "This is God's way of telling us that he's almighty and we're mortal."

Yes, according to Bush, God made Hurricane Charley change course just to show us that He could do it.

I suppose being Governor and brother to the President means Jeb Bush has direct access to the motivations of God, information denied to us lesser mortals. Quite frankly, it's a pretty juvenile motivation. Even the fanatical Fred Phelps gives God a better reason for sending hurricanes.

I don't understand the thinking. Surely it is better to credit the blind workings of nature for such disasters than to suggest that it is just an insane immature deity showing off again. And why would anyone choose to worship and praise such a deity? If it treats people like this in the present life, can you possibly trust this god's purported promises for an afterlife?
