Slavery itself, considered as such in its essential nature, is not at all contrary to the natural and divine law, and there can be several just titles of slavery and these are referred to by approved theologians and commentators of the sacred canons.... It is not contrary to the natural and divine law for a slave to be sold, bought, exchanged or given . ~ Pius IX (Instruction 20 June 1866 AD).

I implore you to recognize the Church as a lady and in the name of the Pope take the King as lord of this land and obey his mandates. If you do not do it, I tell you that with the help of God I will enter powerfully against you all. I will make war everywhere and every way that I can. I will take your women and children and make them slaves....The deaths and injuries you will receive from here on will be your own fault and not that of his majesty nor of the gentlemen that accompany me. ~ "The Requirement", read by Spaniards to native tribes they encountered in the New World

Son of the morning, rise! approach you here!
Come--but molest not yon defenceless urn!
Look on this spot--a nation's sepulchre!
Abode of gods, whose shrines no longer burn.
E'en gods must yield--religions take their turn:
'Twas Jove's--'tis Mahomet's; and other creeds
Will rise with other years, till man shall learn
Vainly his incense soars, his victim bleeds;
Poor child of Doubt and Death, whose hope is built on reeds.

~ Childe Harold - Canto 2, Stanza 3 ~ Alfred, Lord Byron

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is hard business. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." ~ Rudyard Kipling

Ship me somewhere East of Suez,
Where the best is as the worst,
Where there aren t no Ten Commandments,
An a man can raise a thirst;

For the Temple-bells are calling,
An it s there that I would be,
By the old Moulmein Pagoda,
Lookin lazy at the sea.

~ Mandalay ~ Rudyard Kipling

I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so ~ Adolf Hitler

Heretics are not to be disputed with, but to be condemned unheard, and whilst they perish by fire, the faithful ought to pursue the evil to its source, and bathe their heads in the blood of the Catholic bishops, and of the Pope, who is the devil in disguise ~ Martin Luther

An enraged Pope Paul V, in 1606, told the Venetian ambassador, "Do you not know that so much reading of Scripture ruins the Catholic religion?" ~ Diarmaid MacCulloch
