Sunday School lies

In the total absence of inspiration, I'll turn again to examining reviews of my personalized Kindle recommendations. And again I'll turn to a catchy title: Lies Your Sunday School Teacher Told You, by Alexander Drake

In his well-written 2 star review, ApologiaPhoenix spends a little time attacking the title:

Now if we had just the title alone, even that is inaccurate, but it does point to a problem in the church definitely. The only way you can say the Sunday School teacher is telling you lies is if the following is true. It must be the case that the teacher is teaching you one thing. It must then be the case the teacher knows that what they are teaching you is not true. To teach something that is wrong is not a lie, any more than a child getting the wrong answer on a math quiz is lying. To teach something you know to be wrong is a lie.

At least on the surface, I'll concede the point ApologiaPhoenix (or Nick Peters of Deeper Waters Christian Ministries) makes - Sunday School teachers, in general, are not lying - they just don't know what the hell they are talking about.

But, at a deeper level, they are lying because most Sunday School teachers present themselves to children as authorities on the subject.  The lying may not be in the incorrect details, but it exists in the overall presentation. They speak with confidence on those spiritual matters which they don't really understand. But then again, isn't that what Hebrews 11:1 (see previous Meditation) is all about.

So yes - Sunday School teachers do lie. It's part of the job.
