I fell for a fake news story this week and posted on our Facebook page as real. It concerned John Hagee stating that women crying out "Oh God!" during sex were taking God's name in vain contrary to the ten commandments and thus they should be punished.
A patently ridiculous story - except it was reported on television and by several of the print media where I got the tale. And a patently ridiculous story - except it involved John Hagee - no stranger to religiously ridiculous announcements.
However, the original source of the story was Newslo - which specializes in taking actual statements by newsworthy individuals and amusingly extrapolating them to the extreme.
I'm a little embarrassed about falling for the tale, but again, in my defence, it was reported by the regular media, and it did involve John Hagee - defender of the ten commandments and the originator of the supposedly biblical blood moon prophecy.
Pastor John Hagee believes in the absolute authority of scripture. Pastor John Hagee also screwed around on his wife, divorced her, and married his mistress. Again, he believes in the absolute authority of scripture.
Pastor John Hagee is against abortion because of... well, the bible. He also screwed around on his wife, divorced her, and married his mistress.
Pastor John Hagee is against same-sex marriage because of... well, the bible. He also screwed around on his wife, divorced her, and married his mistress.
Pastor John Hagee is a supporter of supposedly biblical marriage consisting of precisely one man and one wife because of... well, the bible in spite of all the other options in the bible. He also screwed around on his wife, divorced her, and married his mistress while his ex-wife was still alive in spite of the specific biblical prohibitions on all three of those acts.
So ridiculous as it seems today as I write this, earlier this week I accepted the story that he regarded women saying "Oh God!" during orgasm as taking God's name in vain as true. I really should not have. Because after all, there actually is an identifiable and clear scriptural passage in the ten commandments to support this teaching. That's unlike much of the other stuff he preaches.
And there are also identifiable and clear scriptural passages against adultery, divorce, and remarriage while an ex-wife is alive. Again, Pastor John Hagee is on record as believing in the absolute authority of scripture.
Oh God, Pastor Hagee, Oh God!
Personal comment:
There is room to suggest a whiff of hypocrisy here, so I'll address it head on. My own life is not perfect. I did screw around on my wife after we separated. We did get divorced. On the other hand, I don't stand up and preach the absolute authority of a scripture which forbids those acts and demand that others follow that scripture.
Have your say...
