God Obscured By Clouds

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Mike Huckabee came up with what the interviewer apparently felt was a deep thought.

"God is much more real to me than the clouds" proclaimed Huckabee.

At least Huckabee limited himself with "to me", not insisting everyone should feel the same way. But I do find it strange that Huckabee, who apparently has never doubted his faith, should choose to compare his God to the clouds, which we tend to think of as insubstantial and relatively ephemeral, rather than making a comparison to the ground beneath his feet.

But still, I do know that however insubstantial they may appear, clouds do exist.

I've been above the clouds, looking down on them.

I've been in the clouds, peering through them.

And of course, I've been in the more usual position of being beneath the clouds, looking up at them.

And there has been no doubt in my mind of the reality of those clouds.

And in none of those situations have I ever sensed the presence or the activity of Huckabee's God.

The world all around me is something I recognize as very real. Gods - who cannot even be defined satisfactorily, not even by those who believe in them, just are not to be found within that reality by me.

Have your say...
