Sowing, and harvest, midwinter and midsummer, these festivals have been celebrated for many millennia, ever since mankind realized that observing the changing seasons facilitated planning for the year ahead. Such observations let our ancestors know when best to hunt, when best to gather, when best to plant, and when best to reap.
And they found it worthwhile to celebrate the changing of the seasons long before there was a priestly caste to lay claim to those festivals and declare them holy.
The making of the observations which enabled mankind to accurately identify the day on which the season changed are the origins of the study of mathematics and science, both the basis of human progress.
What better reason to celebrate!
