Howdy, gang. Well, it seems that the amusing folks in Kansas (remember Fred Phelps and his "God hates fags" so-called Christians at the Westboro Baptist Church?) have given us a new one to enjoy. Benedictine College in Atchison has decided to rename their yoga classes. According to their chancellor, "It (yoga) is a mind and body practice developed under Hinduism, the goal of which is spiritual purification that will lead to a higher level of understanding and eventually union with the divine."

Boy, if there's one thing this world doesn't need, it's a higher level of understanding. And we sure don't want any imported systems of spirituality, do we? We all need to be good Christians, following our own good old homegrown...oh wait, that's right, Christianity was imported too. And from the Middle East, of all places.

As a T'ai Chi practitioner and teacher ("Corrupting Christians since 1993!") I have actually had students ask if we could just not do the meditation portion of class, as they felt it might be an attempt to undermine their Christian beliefs. I always suggested that if their beliefs were so shaky as to be undermined by a simple meditation practice, perhaps they should do something else that would strengthen their beliefs, like giving money to a televangelist with bad hair so he can buy a jet. Hallelujah!

Look, you don't want to do yoga, fine. Do what millions of Americans do instead of getting some wholesome exercise - sit on your rump all day sucking down calories until you no longer need a sofa. Namaste, y'all.
